by Philippa Wehle NEW YORK THEATRE WIRE WRITERS CHOOSE
TEN BEST SHOWS OF 2001-2002 SEASON
New York Theatre Wire has once more asked its reviewers to choose their top ten shows opening between May 1, 2001 and May 1, 2002, On, Off- and Off-Off Broadway, and to list them in order of importance based on artistic merit alone. This year, an unprecedented nine NYTW writers participated in the balloting. The publisher always disqualifies himself ex officio. Our "Top Ten" represents such an intriguing spread of shows, from new plays to adaptations and one women shows, that it was impossible to detect a trend. Of interest, however, is the fact that four of the shows in the top ten began in "downtown" theaters and moved "uptown" (Reno's "Rebel Without a Pause," "Top Dog/Underdog," "Elaine Stritch: at Liberty" and "Urinetown"), and "Metamorphoses" was so popular that it moved from the Second Stage to Circle in the Square.
