The 67th Annual Theatre World Award Winners

A May 10 announcement honored twelve actors for Outstanding Broadway and Off-Broadway Debut Performances during the 2010-2011 theatrical season and announced the winners of the inaugural award for Lunt-Fontanne Award for Ensemble Excellence as well as the winners of the third annual Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence.

The invitation-only Theatre World Awards presentation took place on Tuesday, June 7 and was hosted by Peter Filichia. The ceremony also presented a tribute to John A. Willis, the founder of the Theatre World Awards, who passed away in June 2010.

Both Rose Hemingway and John Larroquette from “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” were part of the twelve Theatre World Award winners, making the production the only musical to have more than one actor recognized for the award. Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” also had two debuting actors Ellen Markin and Jim Parsons who were winners of the Theatre World Award.

The remaining winners of the Outstanding Debut Performance prize were Desmin Borges (“The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity”), Halley Feiffer (“The House of Blue Leaves”), Heather Lind (“The Merchant of Venice”), Zachary Quinto (“Angels in America”), Grace Gummer (“Arcadia”), Patina Miller (“Sister Act”), Arian Moayed (“Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo”), and Tony Sheldon from “Priscilla Queen of the Desert.”

This year marks the first conferral of the Lunt-Fontanne Award for Ensemble Excellence, an award named after the acclaimed professional and personal partnership between Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, to the most highly esteemed ensemble cast. This year’s award is given to the cast of “The Motherf**cker with the Hat,” which includes Booby Cannavale, Chris Rock, Annabella Sciorra, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Yul Vázquez.

Founded in 1945, the Theatre World Awards were the first awards to honor debut performance for Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. While the Theatre World Awards and the Lunt-Fontanne Award honorees are chosen by an ensemble of theater critics in the Theatre World Awards committee, the Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence honoree is chosen by the Trustees of the Dorothy Loudon Foundation. This award goes to an outstanding Broadway or Off-Broadway performance. This year’s Dorothy Loudon Award for Excellence was given to Seth Numrich for his performance in “War Horse.”
